History of the Northport church of Christ

The church of Christ had its earthly beginning on the Day of Pentecost, A.D. 33 (Acts 2).  In the years that followed the church rapidly grew to fill Jerusalem, then Judea, Samaria and finally the whole Roman Empire (Acts 1:8; Colossians 1:23).  It was first established in America in the late 1700s in the New England states.

The Northport congregation began on November 18th, 1951 with 75 brethren present for the first service.  The original building was located on the corner of Main Avenue at 22nd Street.  Due to continued growth of the congregation, this building underwent several additions and renovations.  Finally, crowded conditions required a larger building with more parking spaces.  On November 10th, 1996, we moved into our present facility.  There were 550 people present at the first service.  This building has a seating capacity for approximately 1000, with numerous classrooms, offices, a library, and a large fellowship hall.

In its 54 year history, this congregation has been served by the following men as former elders: Hollis Hitten, O.L. White, W.E. Gilbert, Homer Dunn, E.G. Perry, Harvey Milligan, Jack Waldrop, Bill Sanders, John Barrow, Earnest Broderick and Randy Kelley.  The former pulpit ministers have been: Kenneth Reed, Orlan Miller (51-53), Don Fike (54-59), Joe Williams (60-96), Roger Johnson (96-2003), Brad Adcock (2003-2006) and Kerry Richardson (2007-Current).

Through the years, this congregation has been involved in many evangelistic efforts.  Through the years we have assisted with the support of the U of A student center work, the Moundville work, local radio and television programs, House to House and Heart to Heart Magazine mail outs, mission works in the Panama Canal Zone, Trinidad, Kenya, Korea, Japan, India, Russia and Tanzania, East Africa.  We have also given special encouragement for some of our young men to help prepare them for useful service and roles as ministers and teachers of God's word.  Presently, there are several full-time faithful Gospel preachers who grew up within this congregation.  They were assisted in their studies at Christian universities or preaching schools by partial scholarships provided by this church.  At this time, others among our young men are working toward similar goals.

With the Lord's blessings, much good has been accomplished during the past 54 years.  The future is even brighter.  With the vision and leadership of our present Eldership, plus sound preaching and teaching, and the involvement of our deacons and members, let us continue to grow.  Unto God be the Glory!
