Transportation fuel creates around 25% of global energy-related GHG emissions and a key strategy for the sector to help stabilize climate is to increase lower-carbon fuels from 10 to 30 percent by 2050. This Fuel Sustainability Brief on hydrogen – part of the Future of Fuels Briefing series for practitioners – summarizes market outlook, key issues, and sustainability potential for hydrogen use in commercial transportation. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can reduce emissions 40-85 percent compared to diesel, but they make up less than 1 percent of vehicles in the U.S. today and technological hurdles may inhibit growth for a decade or more. Specialized applications such as in buses, handling equipment, and for renewable electricity storage may be the best options for hydrogen.
